The seeds of Evolution Trio began in the summer of the year 2000 when Bellingham guitarist David Weiss was walking through the local farmers market and heard Nathan Matson playing congas with a jazz vibraphone player. Weiss had just released his debut solo album Finger Noise the year before and was looking for musicians to help him realize his post-modern musical vision. Weiss' instrumental solo guitar music is flavored with Latin and Spanish influences and he thought Matson's congas might add the rhythmic pulse he was seeking to enhance and expand his solo sound.
Enlisting Matson on percussion and drums, Weiss formed The Letter Street Band, a five-piece group which included guitarist Baron Kim (currently of the ever popular Spaceband), Jim Lowry (of Notary Sojac fame), and talented multi-instrumatlist Daniel DePaola. The group specialized in vintage Santana covers and popular percussion driven guitar-centric songs with a dance beat.
After a couple of successful years performing to enthusiastic crowds on the local scene, Kim and DePaola left to pursue other endeavors. The three remaining members, Weiss, Lowry and Matson evolved into a trio called Jacapito and explored ambient world jazz and improvised instrumental music. Jacapito was a hit at the local Allied Arts holiday festival and soon found a home as a house band at Poppe's Martini bar where they played regularly every month for the next few years, and allowed the group to develop their sound.
After Lowry left Jacapito to pursue a career as a music therapist, Weiss and Matson enlisted Chris Powell, who had played bass for several years in another local group with Matson, Fritz and the Freeloaders.
Re-invented as Evolution Trio, the group combines Matson's world beat grooves with Weiss' flashy Latin guitar and pop vocals, anchored by Powell's warm electric bass to create a unique and memorable listening experience.
